The ongoing rap feud between Drake and seemingly every one of his peers continues to escalate. Now, Kanye West, Drake’s longtime adversary, has stepped into the ring. On a recent episode of Justin Laboy’s radio show The Download, Kanye premiered his remix to “Like That,” the Kendrick-assisted single by Future and Metro Boomin that has ignited an industry-wide war.
The Remix: Shots Fired at Drake and J. Cole
Kanye doesn’t hold back in his remix. He takes aim at Drake’s label deals, countering the jabs Drake made at Kendrick over his own contracts. The lyrics hit hard: “It’s a wrap for ns / Where’s Lucian, serve your master, n* / You caught a little bag for your masters, didn’t ya / Lifetime deal, I feel bad for n***s.” This line likely references Drake’s massive deal with UMG signed in 2022.
But Kanye doesn’t stop there. He also directs some shots at J. Cole: “Y’all so out of sight, out of mind / I can’t even think of a Drake line / Play J. Cole, get the p*** dry.”* Clearly, Kanye isn’t pulling any punches.
The Ongoing Feud and Kendrick’s Role
As Drake continues to prod Kendrick for a response to his diss track “Push Ups,” Kanye’s remix adds fuel to the fire. Kendrick Lamar, arguably the nucleus of this entire attack against Drake, remains a central figure. Drake even enlisted AI-generated vocals of West Coast hip-hop legends Tupac and Snoop Dogg for a freestyle entitled “Taylor Made,” where he alleges that Kendrick’s delay in responding was due to Taylor Swift releasing her new album, The Tortured Poets Department.
A History of Animosity
Kanye and Drake have a long history of animosity. It dates back to a 2018 dispute over a beat and culminated in Pusha T’s infamous beef with Drake, during which Pusha exposed the existence of Drake’s son, Adonis. Despite falling out of public favor last year, Kanye has made a comeback with his album Vultures, featuring the chart-topping single “Carnival.” His recent studio session with Metro Boomin suggests a new alliance in the ongoing battle between rap greats from different generations.
