Daymé Arocena is a Cuban singer who has been praised for her fusion of jazz, funk, and Latin rhythms. She has collaborated with renowned artists such as Gilles Peterson, Jane Bunnett, and Roberto Fonseca, and has performed at prestigious venues and festivals around the world. But on her new album, Alkemi, she explores a different side of her musical identity, one that is more personal, spiritual, and pop-oriented.
Alkemi, which means “alchemy” in Yoruba, is a reflection of Arocena’s journey as an artist and a woman. She moved from Havana to Puerto Rico in 2019, after feeling that she had reached a limit in her home country. She also faced some challenges with the Cuban government, which did not approve of her outspokenness and activism. In Puerto Rico, she found a new sense of freedom and inspiration, as well as a connection with her Afro-Caribbean roots.
She teamed up with Eduardo Cabra, the former member of Calle 13 and the producer with the most Latin Grammy nominations in history, to create a sound that blends traditional Cuban music with contemporary pop influences. She also incorporated elements of Santería, the Afro-Cuban religion that she has practiced since childhood, into her lyrics and melodies. She was inspired by Beyoncé’s Black Is King, which showed her that she could mix folk culture and pop music in a creative and respectful way.
The album consists of 10 tracks, each with a different vibe and message. The opening track, “Oshun”, is a tribute to the goddess of love and fertility, who is also Arocena’s patron saint. The song features a catchy chorus and a brass section that adds a festive touch. The second track, “La Rumba Me Llamo Yo”, is a reprise of her previous hit, but with a more upbeat and modern twist. The song celebrates her identity as a rumbera, a woman who dances and sings rumba, a Cuban genre that originated from African slaves.
Other highlights include “Para el Amor: Cantar!”, a romantic ballad that features a duet with Puerto Rican singer iLe, “Nangareo”, a funky and playful song that invites the listener to dance and enjoy life, and “Libre”, a powerful anthem that expresses her desire for freedom and justice. The album closes with “Así Eres Tú”, a sweet and soulful song that dedicates to her husband, who has supported her throughout her career.
Arocena’s Alkemi is a stunning album that showcases her versatility, talent, and charisma. It is also a testament to her courage, resilience, and authenticity. She has found her voice on her new album, and she wants to share it with the world.
