Neil Diamond, the iconic singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York, has treated fans to a digital deluxe edition of his 2005 album 12 Songs. This expanded version, produced by Rick Rubin, arrives nearly two decades after the original release and includes 15 new bonus tracks available for streaming and download. Some of these tracks are being shared with the public for the very first time.
The Story Behind 12 Songs
The album 12 Songs was a follow-up to Diamond’s 2001 release, Three Chord Opera, which marked his return to original material written solely by him since 1974. Rubin’s influence on 12 Songs was significant; he persuaded Diamond to record acoustically, resulting in a barebones, back-to-basics sound. Most of the songs were recorded with Neil playing and singing simultaneously, capturing the essence of a singer-songwriter. Rubin’s approach impressed Diamond, who described their shared love for music as “visceral, passionate, and elevating.”

The sessions featured talented musicians, including Tom Petty guitarist Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. Notably, it was also the final performance by organ player Billy Preston, who passed away in 2006. 12 Songs debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, solidifying its place as one of Diamond’s most successful and acclaimed studio albums.
