French Montana on His New Album ‘Mac & Cheese 5’ and His Love for New York Rap

French Montana is a rapper who has been making waves in the music industry for over a decade. He is known for his catchy hooks, diverse collaborations, and infectious energy. He has worked with some of the biggest names in the game, such as Drake, The Weeknd, Future, and Cardi B. He has also earned several platinum and gold plaques, as well as a Grammy nomination.

On February 26, 2024, French Montana released his fifth studio album, Mac & Cheese 5, the latest installment in his popular mixtape series that started in 2009. The album, which features guest appearances from Lil Durk, Pop Smoke, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Benny the Butcher, and more, showcases French Montana’s versatility, charisma, and love for New York rap.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, French Montana talked about the inspiration behind his new album, his relationship with New York rap legends, his involvement in the Verzuz battles, and his upcoming documentary.

French Montana said that he wanted to make an album that reflected his roots and his growth as an artist. He said that he was influenced by the classic New York rap sound, as well as the new wave of drill music that emerged from the city. He said that he wanted to bridge the gap between the old and the new, and pay homage to his influences.

“I wanted to make an album that was like a time capsule, that had the essence of New York rap, but also the new sound that’s popping right now,” he said. “I wanted to show love to the OGs that paved the way for me, like Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, 50 Cent, and also the new generation that’s killing it, like Pop Smoke, Lil Tjay, Fivio Foreign, and all of them.”

French Montana also revealed that he had a close relationship with some of the New York rap icons, such as Nas, who gave him advice and guidance throughout his career. He said that Nas was like a mentor to him, and that he was honored to have him on his album. He also said that he had a friendly rivalry with 50 Cent, who he often exchanged jokes and jabs with on social media. He said that he respected 50 Cent as a businessman and a rapper, and that he was open to doing a Verzuz battle with him.

“I think me and 50 would be a good Verzuz, because we both have a lot of hits, and we both have a lot of personality,” he said. “We both came from the streets, and we both made it big. We both have a sense of humor, and we both know how to entertain the people. I think it would be fun and competitive, and I think the fans would love it.”

French Montana also discussed his involvement in the Verzuz battles, which he helped create with Swizz Beatz and Timbaland. He said that he was proud to be part of the Verzuz movement, which he said was a celebration of music and culture. He said that he enjoyed watching the Verzuz battles, especially the ones that featured his friends and collaborators, such as Snoop Dogg, DMX, Fabolous, Jadakiss, and Gucci Mane.

“I think Verzuz is one of the best things that happened to music, especially during the pandemic,” he said. “It’s a way to bring people together, and to show love and appreciation to the artists that made history. It’s also a way to educate the younger generation, and to introduce them to the legends that inspired us. I think it’s a beautiful thing, and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

French Montana also teased his upcoming documentary, which he said would chronicle his life story, from his humble beginnings in Morocco, to his rise to fame in America, to his near-death experience in 2019, when he was hospitalized for severe exhaustion and dehydration. He said that he wanted to share his story with the world, and to inspire others to follow their dreams.

“I think my documentary is going to be very powerful and motivational,” he said. “It’s going to show the people where I came from, and how I overcame all the obstacles and challenges that I faced. It’s going to show the people the real me, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s going to show the people that anything is possible, if you work hard and believe in yourself.”

French Montana’s Mac & Cheese 5 is out now on all streaming platforms. His documentary is expected to be released later this year.
